My Voyage to Bellezza – Palermo Part II: Reality

Going on vacation often paints pictures of idyllic landscapes and experiences straight out of a dream, but what happens when the voyage unfolds layers of reality far removed from expectations? This article invites readers on an unconventional exploration of Palermo, a city where beauty and complexity intertwine.

As we delve deeper into the heart of Sicily, this narrative peels away the picturesque postcard views, revealing the authentic pulse of the city through its vibrant streets, the resilience of its people, and the unvarnished truths that lie beneath its historical façades. Join me as we navigate the intricate mosaic of Palermo’s reality, a journey that promises to challenge perceptions and enrich understanding, painting a portrait of a city that thrives not just in its beauty, but in its genuine, unedited life.

The Architecture

The architecture of every building is daring in its choices, and always adds many natural elements to never make you feel trapped in an artificial environment. Everything is thoughtfully crafted by sensitive artists, the likes of Wes Anderson, even the publiciteit bulletins you pass on the streets ooze an artistic vision.

I’m reminded of Eckhart Tolle’s words to live in the now, here in this city more than ever before, because I don’t want to miss a thing. I want to fully appreciate every sight, sound, smell, taste, touch. As a film maker, I usually tend to live behind my artificial eye, the lens of my camera, but here, I made a conscious attempt to keep it at a minimum and soak in the beauty.

Upon seeing so much beauty, divine creation seems less like a stretch. How grateful for living I am.

The Vertical Beauty

Palermo turned me from being a strictly landscape photographer into a portrait photographer, simply because there’s too much beauty in the vertical lines of the city. Palermo’s beauty ascends beyond the horizon, stretching upwards into the realm of the vertical. It’s in these towering lines that the city’s soul whispers tales of resilience and grace. The verticality of Palermo is not just an architectural feat; it’s a testament to the city’s layered history, each line reaching towards the heavens as if in silent prayer or bold proclamation. From the Gothic spires of the Palermo Cathedral that pierce the sky with their intricate details to the slender palm trees that sway gently in the Mediterranean breeze, these vertical lines guide the eye and spirit upwards, urging onlookers to find beauty in the aspirations and dreams of the city.

The narrow streets and alleys, flanked by buildings that stretch upwards, create a unique urban canyon experience, where light and shadow play in endless variations, crafting scenes that change with the passing of the sun. Here, in these vertical lines, is a mix of the divine and the earthly, where the heavens seem just a touch closer, and the stories of generations are stacked upon each other in bricks, balconies, and the hanging laundry that dances lightly in the wind.

This vertical beauty of Palermo speaks to the resilience of its people, who, in the face of adversity, have always looked up. It’s a city that has built its beauty not just in the expanse of its landscapes but in the reach of its aspirations, where the vertical lines stand as silent sentinels of hope, history, and the unyielding spirit of Palermo.

The Fantastic Food

In Palermo, the culinary experience is nothing short of a symphony, with each dish playing its own unique melody that resonates deep within the soul of any food lover. Among these culinary masterpieces, the Carbonara stands out as a revelation; it’s not merely food, but a transcendent experience, arguably the best rendition of this classic dish you’ll ever have the pleasure of tasting. The richness of the sauce, perfectly cured pancetta, and the al dente pasta come together in a harmony of flavors that could easily become the highlight of your culinary journey in Palermo.

Then there’s the gnocchi, a dish so profoundly satisfying and rich that it demands a moment of rest afterwards. After indulging in this intense meal, you may find yourself seeking a short nap, a small price to pay for the sheer indulgence of flavors that envelop you in a warm embrace.

The spaghetti, while less expensive compared to other offerings, does not skimp on taste. It stands as a testament to the fact that true culinary delight does not always come with a hefty price tag. Each bite is a reminder of the simplicity and elegance of Italian cooking, where quality ingredients and time-honored techniques reign supreme.

As for the pizza, it’s a masterpiece of its own, transcending the typical expectations one might have. In Palermo, pizza is elevated to an art form, boasting quality that you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in the world. The combination of a perfectly charred crust, exquisite toppings, and the just-right melt of cheese confirms that Palermo doesn’t just make pizza; it perfects it.

In essence, Palermo offers not just meals, but culinary journeys that linger in the memory long after the last bite.

The City Cons

Even though the streets in the historic center are busy and narrow, cars and scooters will go at speeds of 80 km/h, careless about whether they’ll hit a bystander. I was watching the 1952 De Sica classic Umberto D. here, and it’s very accurate in its depiction of having to dive away from flashing cars.

The city’s cleanliness leaves much to be desired, marred by the pervasive presence of waste and unpleasant odors that fall far short of what one might hope for. More distressing, however, is the defacement of its magnificent historic architecture by what can only be described as “lazy graffiti.” These thoughtless acts of vandalism, characterized by hasty sprays of paint, represent the most unsightly form of desecration. It’s a lamentable sight, especially against the backdrop of the city’s immense beauty, which is tarnished without cause or consideration.

Conclusion

From the vertical lines of its architecture reaching for the skies to the streets that tell stories of resilience and beauty in the face of challenges, Palermo has shown us that true beauty is multifaceted and profound.

The culinary adventures in Palermo, from the unparalleled Carbonara to the heavy, yet comforting, gnocchi, and from the surprisingly affordable spaghetti to the unparalleled quality of its pizza, have been a journey for the palate, revealing the soul of the city through its flavors.

Yet, amidst its splendor, we’ve also confronted the city’s struggles, from its battle with cleanliness to the scars left by vandalism. These realities, however, do not diminish Palermo’s charm; rather, they add layers to its character, making our voyage a richer, more authentic experience.

In the end, Palermo has taught us that beauty is not just found in the flawless or the pristine but often in the midst of imperfections and the everyday. It’s a city that doesn’t just boast about its past glories but lives vibrantly in the present, inviting those who visit to look beyond the surface and find beauty in the “reality” of its existence. Our voyage to Palermo has been a journey of discovery, not just of the city’s tangible wonders, but of its indomitable spirit and the enduring allure that lies in its authentic reality.
